Drama

The Drama productions are great fun and offer many opportunities for the students whether in acting or as stage crew. IB Diploma students are often involved to gain credit for their CAS portfolios and do something enjoyable and useful.

The Department produces an eclectic range of performances, festivals and presentations ranging from full scale musicals plays, straight plays to recitals. KICS has gained a reputation for producing high quality and ambitious shows and over the last few years has presented musicals such as “Charlie and the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'', "Bugsy Malone" and the most  recent was “You're a Good Man Charlie Brown”, as well as classic pieces of theatre including “12 Angry Women'', “Our Town”, “The Tempest” and the world premier of the Afriican Drama, "Parables For A Season". In addition we hold an annual Diploma Theatre Festival often showcasing student’s original theatre works and Middle School students regularly perform their curricular work publically in the One Act Festival. We are members of ISTA (International Schools Theatre Association) travelling across London, UK to attend theatre workshops with other member schools.

Also, addition to this KICS was also graced by the traveling theatre companies like Trestle Theatre Company, who specialises in masks work and The Handlebards, a Shakespeare traveling theatre company whose performances during their stay pulled the full audience. The theatre company worked with each drama class for a whole week providing valuable workshops to the students. Theatrical productions are always lively and well-attended. Students, staff, parents, and members of the wider community have all contributed to these productions helping to make them the successes they have been.

Drama is taught from the Secondary Section. From Year 7 throughout Year 13. For Middle school Y7-Y9,  it takes place in a rotation with students taking about 14 weeks of Design Technology, Art, Music and Drama throughout the year. At Y10 to Y11, the students select to take either a year or two long course in Design Technology, Drama, Music or Art. The Middle School students work on shadow theatre, masks, monologues, short plays and explore a variety of themes using devising theatre. The IB Theatre Diploma course is offered in Y12, theatre students will learn different forms of theatre practices from participatory and research activities. As theatre makers, students will explore different  opportunities to develop their skills in different aspects of performance and production by working as researcher, writers, designers, performers, and technicians.

Central to the ethos of Drama at KICS is the ensemble approach that values each student’s individual contribution and also provides all students with opportunities for growth and enrichment. We strive for professional excellence but recognise the production and performance processes as equally important. There is equal emphasis placed on Writing/Devising, Directing, Acting and Technical Theatre experience for our students.
